Mysterious Motion in M83

Location: Star Formation Fields (Crete IV), September 21-25, 2026; Rethymno, Crete, Greece 

Abstract: The Radcliffe Wave raised a question it is hard answer from inside the Milky Way: do other spiral galaxies show periodic oscillations that move gas out of the plane? ALMA's full-disk CO map of M83 lets us look. I'll show the velocity field in 3D, remove the parts a barred spiral has to have, and show what's left. Some of it is familiar. Some of it isn't yet. I'll also say what we thought we saw, what we actually saw, and what we're doing about the difference.
